EMERGENCY! Brutal Violence in Sudan — Send Help Now

Submitted by wahyudi on
mass displacement in sudan

In El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, brutal attacks have forced tens of thousands of civilians to abandon their homes.

For over 500 days, families have been trapped under siege — now escaping through gunfire, starvation, and relentless violence. In recent days (October 2025), 26,000 people have fled. Thousands more remain trapped without food, water, or medical care.

UNHCR teams continue working on the ground, providing shelter, clean water, emergency supplies, and protection for displaced families.

But access is severely limited — and needs are rising by the hour.

Crisis Overview:

Sudan: The Worst Humanitarian Crisis in History

Sudan has endured decades of conflict and displacement since the Darfur crisis in 2003.

But the last two years have been the darkest period in the nation’s history. Since 15 April 2023, the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated the country, shattered millions of lives, and claimed thousands of lives.

Nearly half of Sudan’s population — 25 million people — urgently need humanitarian assistance and protection. The country is facing severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel.

More than 25 million people are living in acute food insecurity, including 8.5 million at emergency levels; many people don’t know if they are able to eat or not tomorrow.

Shortages of basic needs, ongoing violence, and uncertainty about when this war will end have forced 13 million people — one in every three Sudanese — to flee their homes.

Among them, 8.6 million are displaced within Sudan, while 3.8 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries.

Women and Children: The Most Vulnerable

Sudan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis has a devastating impact on women and children. Even before the war, more than 3 million women and girls were already at risk of gender-based violence, including domestic violence.

“Our teams on the ground are witnessing the horrific suffering experienced by women and girls who have been forced to flee Sudan,” — Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“These shocking human rights abuses must stop immediately. Support for survivors and those at risk is urgently needed — yet funding remains far from sufficient.”

Attacks on health facilities, destruction of medical equipment, and threats to health workers have made life-saving care even harder to access.

According to WHO and UNFPA, pregnant women are among the worst affected.

Nearly three-quarters of health facilities in Sudan are now non-functional. Diseases such as cholera, measles, and malaria continue to spread — while two-thirds of the population has no access to basic health services.

UNICEF reports that Sudan is now the world’s largest child displacement crisis.

More than 90% of the 19 million school-age children no longer have access to formal education.

Climate Crisis: A Hidden Threat Behind the War

The conflict is not the only threat. Climate disasters, such as droughts and floods, have destroyed farms and livestock, worsening hunger and poverty. In many parts of Sudan, famine is now a real and immediate danger.

In August 2024, the Famine Review Committee officially confirmed famine in Darfur — the first in seven years. Yet millions more across Sudan stand on the brink of the same fate.

Without solutions and international support, hundreds of thousands more will continue to flee in search of food, water, and safety.

What UNHCR Is Doing

UNHCR staff in field

UNHCR is on the front lines, working tirelessly inside Sudan and across neighboring countries to:

  • Provide emergency shelters, tents, clean water, food, and essential items (blankets, soap, mosquito nets, etc.)
  • Protect women and children who have survived violence
  • Set up safe transit centers for new arrivals
  • Deliver psychosocial support and legal protection
  • Establish emergency education for displaced children

But the needs are growing — and available funding is not enough.
